Your Legacy....Building Futures
When making a will we will all naturally think of those closest to us, our friends, family and loved ones. However, making a will also gives each and very one of us the chance to do something more. A chance to help some of the world's most vulnerable people to get a better start in life and work their way out poverty with dignity.
For example:
- £1000 could pay the salaries of all 22 Village Savings and Loans Association trainers for one month;
- £2,000 could build a toilet block at a school;
- £6,500 could build a classroom at a school in Kenya or Uganda.
How a legacy can change lives...
When Mr Peter Jones (name changed) sadly died in 2004 he left Build Africa a gift in his will. This gift helped Build Africa run two of our major projects - a loan system in Uganda, which went to benefit over 2,000 young people and providing street children and orphans with access to an education which went on to benefit over 6,000 children. In total, one gift left in his will, went on to help us change the lives and futures of over 6,000 children and young people on the other side of the world.
Why should I make a will?
Making a will is the only way to ensure that your possessions go to the people and causes you want them to go to. If you die without a will your estate could be split very differently to how you had imagined.
How do I make a will?
Build Africa strongly recommends that you consult a solicitor before making your will.
How do I update my will?
If you wish to make small changes to your will, a document called a codicil can be drawn up by your solicitor. This is then kept with your will. You must never write on the original document as this makes it invalid.
What type of legacy could I leave to Build Africa?
These are the three most common types of legacies:
- Named items, such as an item of jewellery, are called specific legacy.
- A fixed amount of money is called a pecuniary legacy.
- When all the other legacies have been made, everything which is left is called the residue. A residuary legacy is a percentage or fraction of this residue.
All three types of legacy are tax free.
